Things you just need to have in the pantry

Not everything on this list is totally essential - build it up slowly, based on what you want to make now.  A lot of it will keep if stored correctly - don't leave open packets of things in the cupboard as it will attract weevils and other creatures.

Here is a list of what I keep as staples in the pantry, I always keep these things on hand and buy in bulk where possible:

Tins/bottles

  • tomatoes
  • corn
  • capsicum
  • garlic
  • chilli
  • ginger
  • chick peas, beans, legumes, lentils
  • coconut cream and coconut milk
  • tomato paste

Baking

  • flour (self raising, plain, corn, etc)
  • sugars (brown, white, castor, icing)
  • coconut
  • choc bits
  • baking powder
  • bi-carb soda
  • vanilla
  • cacao powder
  • yeast

Dried

  • rice
  • pasta
  • noodles
  • asian noodles
  • quinoa
  • corn chips
  • beans
In the fridge
  • butter (never margarine)
  • cream
  • milk
  • eggs
  • sour cream
  • cheeses
  • cream cheese

Herbs and spices

  • pepper corns
  • sea salt
  • cumin
  • cinnamon
  • star anise
  • cloves
  • paprika (smoked)
  • cajun spices
  • cinnamon sticks
  • all purpose seasoning
  • bay leaves
  • tumeric
  • kaffir lime
Other
  • peanut butter
  • jams
